Jerald Herting

Dr. Herting is a Research Associate Professor in the department of Psychosocial and Community Health (Nursing) and in the Department of Sociology at the University of Washington. Dr. Herting has been a long-term member (over 20 years) of the Reconnecting Youth Research Program. The research program includes individual and school-based interventions directed at health and mental health of adolescents and at students at risk for school-dropout. He has been part of the development of evidence-based programs for students listed by the White Houseís Annual Report of School Safety and recommended by the US Department of Educationís Safe and Drug Free Schools Program.

Hertingís research includes evaluation of intervention programs in the areas of substance abuse prevention, school dropout prevention, and mental health promotion, and he has general interests in adolescent health, educational attainment, and the transition from adolescence to young adulthood. His recent collaborative NIH grant work includes evaluation of an 8th grade to high school transition program, development of school district-wide suicide prevention training, and assessing contextual effects of neighborhood disadvantage on substance use and mental health of adolescents.

In addition to this work, Dr. Herting has long-term interests in research methodology, in general, and as it applies to the evaluation of intervention programs.

Dr. Herting holds degrees from the University of Washington (BA and PhD) and from SUNY at Stony Brook (MA).
